John Adams' Comments on Society
A Brief Study of the Evolution of Society
“I must study politics and war, that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history and naval architecture, navigation, commerce, and agriculture in order to give their children the right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain.”
~John Adams
What is the basic idea Adams is conveying?
Adams (and the beginning generations of America) had to work hard. Why?
If the early generations of a society must labor hard for what they earn and to provide a future for their children and grandchildren, what must those future generations labor for? Do they “labor” at all?
If the future generations do not labor, what will the result be?
