Writing Assignment 2:
Essay
Essay writing is probably the most common form of writing in education. If you continue to pursue a college degree, you will take an average of about 40 classes. In those classes you will probably be required to write anywhere from 1-4 papers which averages to about 2 papers per class. This means that you could possibly (depending on your field of study) write somewhere close to 80 college papers, give or take some. So, if we are going to write so many essays, why not learn to write them right?
The object of Writing Assignment 2 will be to discuss three main points surrounding the Lewis and Clark Expedition. You will discuss these three main points using the structure of an essay: Introduction (with thesis statement), Body (paragraphs that transition and have topic sentences), and Conclusion (where you restate what your paper is about and wrap things up). You may take any angle with your three main points. You may discuss three interesting facts three exciting events of the Expedition. Or, you may discuss more complex subjects like: three reasons why the Expedition was mainly an imperialistic act of American expansion. You may discuss three of Jefferson’s original designs for the Expedition. Or, you may choose any argument that has three main points, or any three main points that suit you.
The most important thing to learn through this essay is the effective use of a thesis statement. You must have a thesis statement. Your thesis statement should be the last sentence of your introduction, and it should summarize your three main points in the same order that you will discuss them in your paper.
Tips: Make an outline for your paper. Outline your three main points, your thesis statement and conclusion. IT WILL HELP! Also, use your Lewis and Clark journals for facts and quotes.
