A Look at Early Colonial Life
Discussion of Forefather’s Song
o Was written in 1630, around the same time the Bay Colony was established
o The land was mainly wilderness
o What were the difficulties of Winter? Freezing cold wind, frost bite. If you do survive, it's not without cost.
o There are five hazards to growing food listed in the song. What are they?
1. Worms (before it is grown)
2. Birds (during growth--pluck up the blade)
3. Squirrels (during growth--pluck up the blade)
4. Raccoon (full corn in the ear)
5. Deer (full corn in the ear)
o What is the trouble the Colonists face with their garments (clothing)? Wool is scarce, garments are thin, the garments they brought with are worn and torn.
o What is the “humorous” benefit of clouting (mending) garments? They are warmer.
o What are six food staples of the early colonists?
1. Carrots
2. Turnips
3. Fish
4. Clams
5. Parsnips
6. Pumpkins
o In your own words, summarize the statement in the last stanza of the song. If God intends for you to come, don't be scared away by the trials, for there are blessings also.
